If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know that I believe in the power of one -- one person can make a difference in this world. You also know that Alexandra Scott of Alex's Lemonade Stand is one of the people who best personifies the power of one.
There is a poster in Denver International Airport celebrating Alex's contribution to pediatric cancer reserch. I've walked by it many times. There's a url at the bottom for the Foundation for a Better Life, but I never took the time to log on.
My flight was delayed today, so I decided this would be a good time to log on to www.forbetterlife.org.
I was glad I did. The site is full of inspirational stories about everyday people. Today's highlighted value is honesty. A father relates a story about his son who accidently scratched a car with his bicycle, and didn't know what to do.
I spent some time on the site. FBL is a privately funded organization that does not solicit funds -- only stories of real people living their professed values. The Foundation for a Better Life "supports the belief that each individual is entitled to personal dignity and self-respect and that most individuals are willing, when given the opportunity, to take personal responsibility for their actions and well-being. The Foundation also believes that capable people may also benefit from encouragement and reminders from time to time. Generally, people who have the opportunity and the ability will make appropriate common sense decisions which will have a positive and uplifting effect on themselves, their community, and their country".
I don't know who the people behind the foundation are -- but I love what they have to say. I've been feeling a bit down lately -- the hurricanes and their aftermath, the seemingly endless war in Iraq, our rising national debt, and the deep political divisions in our country got to me last week. I am a living example of the statement "capable people may also benefit from encouargement and reminders from time to time". I got some encouragement by logging on the the FBL site.
Check it out. I think you'll like what you see.
That's it for today. Thanks for reading. For more common sense advice on leadership, careers and running a small business, log on to my website www.CommonSenseGuy.com.
I'll see you around the web, and at Alex's Lemonade Stand.
