Last week I was in Gatlinburg, TN for a meeting. Gatlinburg is a charming town in the Great Smokey Mountains – very picturesque. I enjoyed my visit.
While I was there, I saw something that I had never seen before – numbered traffic lights. When I asked for directions to the meeting site, my host said, “go to traffic light 8 and make a left, it will be about a quarter mile ahead on the right”.
“Traffic light 8? The lights are numbered?” I asked. “You bet”, he said. Sure enough, when I got to Gatlinburg, the first traffic light I passed was number 1. When I got to number 8, I made a left, and there I was.
I think this is a great example of common sense in action. Instead of having to count lights, or look for cross street names, all I had to do was look at the lights – and the clearly marked numbers right next to them.
Of course, Gatlinburg is a small town with one main street. Nevertheless, it sure is easy to find your way around because of the traffic light numbering system. My hat is off to the Gatlinburg official who figured out this one. He or she gets a shout out for some great applied common sense.
