The Monday, April 16 In the Lead column in the Wall Street Journal was entitled Executive Adopts Motto for Job Stress: Work Hard, Be Nice. The executive is Jun Haraguchi, CEO of Konica Minolta Business Solutions, US.
Mr. Haraguchi and his team have raised relief funds for the creative arts program for the New Orleans schools. The motto of the New Orleans School District – “work hard, be nice”.
Great motto, if you ask me. I’ve never thought of it in such succinct terms, but I try to do this every day – work hard and be nice.
Sometimes these two simple concepts can seem to be at odds with one another. When you’re working hard and under a deadline, it can be difficult to remember to be nice to coworkers – or in my case, the people at FedEx Kinko’s. The stress of hard work sometimes takes a toll on niceness.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We all can work hard and be nice at the same time. It just takes a little discipline. I call this discipline, “working hard at being nice”. And that’s the common sense point for today. Work hard at being nice.
Pay attention to the people around you – your family, your coworkers, the people you lead, the service people who make your life easier. If you work hard at being nice, you’ll find that people will be nice to you – and your life will be a little bit brighter.
That’s it for today. Thanks for reading. Log on to my website www.BudBilanich.com for more common sense. Check out my other blog: www.SuccessCommonSense.com for common sense advice on becoming the life and career star you are meant to be.
