If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know that I am a big proponent of mentoring. Mentoring is not just for young employees. People with lots of experience can also benefit from working with a mentor.
However, experienced employees often balk at being mentored. In their book, Generations at Work, Ron Zemke, Claire Raines and Bob Filipczak discuss the challenges of mentoring experienced workers and offer some good advice.
Mentoring Experienced Employees
- Assign experienced workers mentors who are respected leaders in your company.
- Coach mentors to be tactful and respectful. They should acknowledge experienced workers knowledge and contributions.
- Coach mentors to focus on two way dialogue to obtain experienced worker buy in.
I think these suggestions are solid, common sense advice for all mentors – not just those who are mentoring more experienced employees. The biggest piece of common sense advice when it comes to mentoring – treat people with the respect they deserve as human beings.
That’s it for today. Thanks for reading. Log on to my website www.BudBilanich.com for more leadership common sense. Check out my other blog www.CareerSuperStar.com for common sense advice on becoming the life and career star you are meant to be.
