19 Qualities of Success

The May/June issue of Success Magazine has a sidebar article that recaps the 19 Qualities of Success presented by Herb Greenberg and Patrick Sweeny in their book Succeed on Your Own Terms.  I think these qualities are worth posting here.

Successful people are pretty good in all of these characteristics and really strong in three or four of them.  Where are you?  In which of these characteristics are you really strong?  Where are you lacking.  Use your answers to develop your personal success plan.

Bob Parsons' -- Go Daddy CEO -- 16 Rules for Success

Yesterday, I did a post about Bob Parsons, founder of Go Daddy, the largest web domain name host in the world.  I that post, I focused on Mr. Parsons’ advice for business branding.  After I did the post, I spent some time on his blog, Hot Points, and came across his rules for success.  I like these common sense rules, so I’m posting them here.

Bob Parsons 16 Rules for Success in Business and Life in General

1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone.
2. Never give up.
3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think.
4. With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen to you, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be.
5. Focus on what you want to have happen.
6. Take things a day at a time.
7. Always be moving forward.
8. Be quick to decide.
9. Measure everything of significance.
10. Anything that is not managed will deteriorate.
11. Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you’re doing.
12. Never let anybody push you around.
13. Never expect life to be fair.
14. Solve your own problems.
15. Don’t take live too seriously.
16. There’s always a reason to smile.

I particularly like rule 16 – there’s always a reason to smile.  When I smile, I am more upbeat and productive.  I try to focus on the possibilities inherent in each situation – not the negatives. 

Try it – the next time you are feeling down, look for a reason to smile in the situation.  When you find it, you’ll be well on your way to solving your problem.

Advice from John Wooden's Father

Just a quick post today.  The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments are in gear.  Duke was the first big name team to get upset. 

As most college basketball fans know, John Wooden was a legendary coach.  He won 10 National Championships as the UCLA coach.  Seven of the 10 were in a row – 1967 to 1973.  It’s unlikely that any coach or school will dominate that ever again.

Coach Wooden’s father gave him some advice when he was a young guy.  It’s worth repeating here:

• "Don’t worry about whether you’re better than someone else; but never cease trying to be the best you can become.  You have control over the second.  You can’t control the first."

Pretty good common sense advice – on two fronts.  1) Life is about improving – get better every day; enjoy the journey.  2) Focus on what you can control – not what’s out of your control.

Coach Wooden’s old team is pretty good this year.  It will be interesting to see how far they go in the tournament.  My money is on Florida to repeat.  I think they have a great coach, an experienced group of players and are peaking at the right time.  We’ll see….
